Ok, so for those of you who don’t know the whole s…

Ok, so for those of you who don’t know the whole story here’s the background information. I took a class at U of T called The Business of Software, which entailed creating a business plan over the semester for – you guessed it – a software business! My group was chosen as one of the select few that would present for the entire class and an “expert panel” which just so happened to have on it a guy from a venture capital firm. Through some very strange stroke of luck, he happens to be looking for some bright young minds to work on trying to make a business out of a Microsoft Research project, which has an uncanny similarity to the business we just pitched. And so, after a few e-mails flying back and forth, we started our internship at VFM Interactive, developing a web-based prototype of the idea and also working out the business case.

At the end of the summer we presented our work, which, if I do say so myself, is totally kick-ass. Apparently we weren’t the only ones who thought so, and Rick’s firm made the decision to throw a whole ton of money our way to get this baby off the ground! But it gets better! We pitched it to another VC firm (just for fun), and they want on board too!!

So now we have a CEO (Mark), who knows a hell of a lot more about running a business then me and my 2 classmates, and he gets to take care of all those pesky little details that we have no clue about. At the moment, a bunch of lawyers are duking it out over who gets what and for how much, after which we’ll get some money to set up some new offices and do lots of cool, fun stuff with. In the meantime, Rick thought it would be a fabulous idea if myself and my two classmates-turned-coworkers spent the next month in Europe backpacking around, taking pictures, talking to tourists, and basically finding the huge problem that our business is going to solve.

And that’s it. So tomorrow me, Elliott and Slava will be hopping on a plane to Paris with our backpacks, Eurorail passes, cameras and smiles on our faces!! So stay tuned for some adventures, as I’m sure many will follow. I’ll hopefully be updating this every other day or so, so check back often.

    Hi Jenn,
Very excited to read about the month-long trip you guys took. I was actually also backpacking Europe for that period. I took a slightly different route and spent my new year in Lisboa instead of Paris.

Which one was your fav part of Europe? other than… the shopping district in London.. that seems to be a popular choice =)

It was nice meeting you today at PlanetEye =)

    Tim.
